Does the alarm need to be activated I've used for several batches of toffee popcorn & the light flashes, but there is no sound?

The alarm does not have to be activated and it should work fine without any activation. if you're having issues with the alarm your piece might be defective and you should seek a replacement asap.

I can't read the temp. Is there supposed to be a screen back light behind the numbers If yes then how do i turn it on?

This model does not come with a back light just a regular LCD screen display which makes it easy to read. To turn on the thermometer press the mode button to get it started. We would suggest that you make sure th e battery is in good condition before assuming that there's something wrong with the thermometer
What Type of Batteries does It Need?

This Thermometer uses two L1154 batteries it's the button style battery. These are 1.5 volt alkaline batteries usually found and used for watches, Another option or cross number is LR44.

Terrible pot clip, but pretty good thermometer
I have had this for 1 1/2 years and the thermometer is still accurate. There are 2 pretty large problems. First the pot clip is completely useless. To use this, you will have to find another pot clip and replace the one that came with the thermometer. Secondly the heat shield isn't sufficient if you are cooking things like toffee that get over 260F. As the temperature rises the LCD display gets harder and harder to read.
Sadly this still leaves this thermometer near the top of available options. Most candy thermometers are either not accurate or take so long to reach the correct temperature that they don't help much with candy making. The best thermometers I have found are instant read meat thermometers, but I don't want to have to hold the thermometer while stir with the other hand.
