Popular Fresh Flowers for Beautiful Cakes & Desserts
Fresh flowers have been used in cake decorating for centuries. Using edible flowers can be a way to add a touch of elegance and charm to cakes, desserts and cocktails.
Roses
The most popular and versatile choice for decorating wedding cakes is roses. They are symbolic of love & romance which makes them a suitable choice for the occasion. Garden, spray, and Juliet roses are the most frequently used during the wedding season. Roses come in a wide variety of colors from soft pastels to bold hues that can complement any color scheme. Most are edible & safe to be used on cakes, however, it’s important to make sure to use pesticide-free organic roses.
Prep: It’s important to properly prep your roses before inserting or placing them onto a cake. You want to be sure you are inserting a clean stem into your cake. Gently wash each stem to remove any dirt or debris and cut away thorns.
Placement: There are different ways you can insert roses into your cake. Clean organic and pesticide-free roses are safe to place directly into your cake. If you are looking to avoid direct contact with your cake you can use flower spikes, straws, or floral tape. Toothpicks are helpful to use when you want to avoid the head from touching your cake & are visually undetectable.
Timing: Always keep flowers in water & in a cool room or refrigerator if possible. Place the fresh roses onto your cake no more than a few hours before the event to prevent wilting. Decorating your cake the night before will result in wilted dropping roses.
Pansies
Pansies are a popular choice for cake decorating & garnishing cocktails. They are so vibrant and eye-catching that they transform a plain white cake into a mesmerizing dessert. Pansies have a mild leafy taste similar to lettuce with a subtle sweetness and can be consumed entirely. Be sure to select pesticide-free pansies that are meant for consumption.
Prep: Wash gently in cold water & allow them to air dry on a paper towel or clean towel.
Placement: Place pansies on desserts, around cake boards inside drinks, or press them gently onto buttercream when decorating a cake. Handle with care, these florals are very thin and delicate.
Timing: Keep these refrigerated for freshness. Decorate as close to the event time as possible to prevent wilting.
Violets
Violets are a beautiful bold deep purple color that adds natural beauty to cakes & desserts.
Prep: Choose fresh organic violets. Gently wash them in cold water and allow them to air dry on a paper towel or clean towel.
Placement: Consume only the petals, the rest is safe to be in contact with food but should be removed right before consuming. Scatter petals over cakes & desserts or gently press into buttercreams etc.
Timing: Keep these refrigerated for freshness. Decorate as close to the event time as possible to prevent wilting.
